Kings Park

Now me blog visitors if you have never been to Perth you are in for a treat. Kings Park, in the centre of the city is possibly one of the most beautiful city parks in the world, certainly one of the biggest.  And, it’s elevated above the city to about 60 m which gives you wonderful panoramic views of Perth CBD and way beyond.

One of me favourite things about Kings Park is the botanical gardens, I just love the smell of all the flowers and plants.

Coming from Europe I had never seem most of these plants before. The Wild Flowers in particular are so cool and pretty much are native to just Western Australia. I have been with me humans in the countryside this time of year and you can see the Wild Flowers blooming as far as the eye can see.

These are mostly Kangaroo Paw and Pink Everlastings. Although me humans tell me the yellow one is a peppermint tree.

This is the Boab Tree, native to the far north of Western Australia in the Kimberley region.

This is a mystery because its closest relatives are in Africa and it’s totally unlike any other Australian tree. No one knows how it got here when its relatives are on the other side of the Indian Ocean 6000 km away. I tell ya it wasn’t us dogs so my theory is it was the first Humans 75,000 years ago who came out of Africa, travelled around the rim of the Indian Ocean to get here. Or did the seeds drift across the Indian Ocean from Africa? I love a mystery!

Guilty!

I will admit to a certain amount of wee-age on some of these plants, just could not help me-self sorry… But hey, its all for a good cause eh.

These stunning yellow guys are me favourite native Wild Flower, the Banksia. Named after Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist who travelled with Captain Cook on his first venture to Australia from England in the 1700’s. See I’m full of facts coz I’m a Border Collie! The Banksia plants are known for the prolific production of nectar which is great for bees and this little guy, the Honeyeater or Red Wattlebird, native to southern Australia.

I love this park and it great views of city and nature, if you ever get to visit Perth ya gotta come up here.

Now sadly after a perfect afternoon of wandering around the park with me Humans we have to go home.

But oh wait… one good thing about being up here is ya can see the traffic on the roads leaving the city…

and this is a Friday afternoon on a long weekend so every Human known to dog is heading south to the southern beaches, wine and food regions for the long weekend.

Oh well we will just have to stay up here a little longer! Here are a few more Wild Flowers to enjoy…

See ya and have a great weekend

Oh, and if ya want to know more about Kings Park and Perth, here is a great web site.

The Largest Tennis Ball in the World

Last Christmas I got the shock of me life and the best prezzie ever! Now most Humans know me as a fine connoisseur of balls. I just love em and have even blogged about them in the past. Well last Christmas Santa-Dog left me the biggest tennis ball in the world! Today I thought I’d share some pictures with you guys.

How did it get up there? Bloody Humans…
Gotcha!
Tastes pretty good too.

The Human tennis players using this ball must be huge monsters, just sayin…

Until next time.

Port Walking

Last weekend was such a lovely weekend. The late winter / early spring weather was perfect for going out for a walk. Coincidently me Humans discovered a guided walk around Fremantle harbour run by Fremantle Ports that was dog friendly.

Anyway although me Humans were a little sceptical being locals it turned out way more interesting than any of us thought. Anyone local reading me blog should go along, the walks are free, ya get morning tea chucked in (although me Humans scoffed most of it, all I got was a bitten off biscuit crumb).

The views are spectacular and the guides are really knowledgeable about the port both from a working shipping port perspective to the multitude of animal wildlife and ecological programs going on.

It did involve far to much standing around!
Any of you jokers gunna chuck me ball?

Now I love boats and ships and pretty much anything that moves on water. I know, I know, I’m a Border Collie but there is something captivating about so much water and so much activity on the water. Ya sometimes see dolphins too but sadly not today.

A few facts and figures about the Port of Fremantle in Western Australia. Most of this from the knowledgeable guides: The harbour was opened in 1897. It housed the largest submarine base in the southern hemisphere during WW2. In the 1970’s it was a major entry point into Australia for hundreds of thousands of European immigrants.

Sooo many Humans from Europe came to Australia through the port of Fremantle

Fremantle is a major container port but also hosts cruise ships and many ferries and private pleasure craft.

This Human Dude is C Y O’ Connor, West Australia’s Chief Engineer and responsible for the construction of Fremantle Harbour, something other engineers thought impossible. Sad story though, he was also responsible for building a water supply line to the goldfields at Coolgardie some 330 miles from Perth and is the world’s longest water main. However when first turned on no water flowed and myth has it he was so distraught he committed suicide. The really sad thing is a few days later the water did flow it just took a very long time due to the huge distance.

This boat is the Leeuwin II, a sailing ship based out of Fremantle Port, that is operated by Leeuwin Ocean Adventures a charity group taking young Humans out on 3 day training adventures. Lucky people, I’d volunteer!

That’s it for me this week, I’m off to find a Human to finally chuck me ball.

Embarrassing Ralph

Rummaging through me Humans photo collection as ya do… I found a few very embarrassing pictures I had forgotten about. I probably used some of em in earlier blogs but who cares eh. So this blog is to make a statement to other Humans: Please don’t do this to ya dog! Please?

Last Easter some of me Humans saw someone do this on Instagram and couldn’t resist trying out the Bunny shot prank on me. Good thing I got the treat else I would have bitten that hand!

And of course every Christmas there is the obligatory Christmas getup. Now I must find some of those really funny Christmas Jumpers me Humans wear as they are way funnier.

I was just checking out the mice situation in the pantry, honest!

So what bloody idiot ate me Frisbee? Oh wait… that would be me! Gulp.

The car trip. I hate long car trips!

This is really embarrassing! You see me Humans are split on what Rugby team they support. It’s between the Australian Wallabies (in yellow and green colours) and the New Zealand All Blacks (silver and black). Now on account of the fact that I match the New Zealand colours as a Border Collie I go for the All Blacks. On this particular day where New Zealand was playing Australia, one of those traitors supporting the Aussies put this scarf on me. Not Happy!

Me Humans couldn’t resist could they. Just coz the shop owners name is Ralf I was plonked down in front of the door… really peoples… Embarrassing…

Wots the problem? I’m incubating me eggs… err me balls…

Wot? Oh this mess? Nope was not me, a big wind came and blew everything around.

Oh come on, It’s still a ball alright! Ya can still chuck it for me.

Enjoy your weekend!

The Mystery of “What Really Happened to Curly-Human” Solved

Hey, Curly-Human left me this little present, a farewell drawing of me with love! Miss ya Curly-Human!

And… I have found Curly-Human! Well I saw her and heard her voice on a big screen today, in something the Humans call a Skype call. Now I’m not stupid ya know, I realised some time ago that when you see ya human or even a Puddy Tat on the TV Screen it’s not really them but just a picture! Ok… Ok… I did used to think a Puddy Tat on the screen was real.

It was worth a peer behind for the said Puddy Tat but my Humans laughter put me right on that little joke.

So Curly’s OK peoples! Just a long way away. It turns out she is visiting friends in our old town of Haddenham in England. Kinda wish I was with her, I could see me old mates again…

… Nahhh on the other hand that would mean a trip in that flying contraption again, nope, nope, NO! Here are a few pickies from me days living in Haddenham. It’s a pretty little village in Buckinghamshire about 80 km north of London.

Old memories eh? And seeing the old village pond again reminds me of the time I “fell in” the duck pond and chased some ducks, upsetting the locals… better leave that story to another time…

Boy was I little and sooo cute back then! Still had to grow into me feet and ears.
Me, a little pup, flying through the Haddenham fields . that’s Curly in the background.

You may think some of these pictures look familiar, well it turns out our quaint little village is often used as a backdrop for filming the British Mystery TV series Midsomer Murders! Yep keep an eye out for older episodes ya might just see me in the background photobombing a shoot!!

P.S Still want me flock back together though, just sayin.

The Master Detective Steps Up

Hi Guys,

Something I need to get off my chest… You see my Humans have been quite careless and lost one of me flock. Yep, Curly-Human has gone missing. It’s been three weeks now and no sign of her.

I keep expressing my deep dissatisfaction with this turn of events but my stupid Humans seem quite oblivious to the crisis. I’ve tried the old technique of sidling up to a human, yip and look deep and meaningfully into their eyes, nothin… The response is usually some facetious remark like “What is it Lassie? Boy down a well?” Well yeah in a manner of speaking, WE ARE MISSING SOMEONE YA DOPEY HUMAN!!!

I guess it’s up to me then to sort this all out and come to the rescue. Don’t panic everybody, the Border Collie’s got this!

Observations of a master dog sleuth then:

  1. Last seen with my humans (all three of em) three weeks ago helping her out to the car with a lot of human junk stuff (but they always carry a lot of that stuff – I just call it crap…).
  2. Yes now that I think about it there was a lot more human stuff than usual that went with her.
  3. Her room in our house is just as she left it… and just as messy… which I love! So no change there then.

Curlybed

  1. Big warning note to me though… I keep an eye on our family calendar entries – I’m a Border Collie, I need to know these things… Nudder, nothing new on the calendar except one last entry which is a big sticker of an aeroplane… briiiiii I hate those contraptions, I once spend days travelling in one… never never again. If one of those infernal beasts has her then we are in BIG trouble everybody… Just sayin.ch15-14  See this is how ya travel in em. Not cool.
  2. More recently I have noticed Princess-Human sneaking into Curly’s room and removing items such as the odd piece of human clothing. Now I know from experience this would NEVER happen if Curly were around or even nearby. All hell would break loose if Curly or Princess stole each other’s stuff. Princess must know more than she is letting on. Himmm…
  3. One more thing, I did hear Curly’s voice the other day coming out of one of the Humans addiction devices they always have attached to their hands (don’t know why – another mystery of the Human universe I live in). Any way it was definitely her, and I tried to bark back but was shooed off into another room – mutter… mutter… But it proves she is still around somewhere.

My initial conclusions then are this:

Curly-Human is still with us but has been shrunk down to the size of an insect and is now living in one of those devices the Humans call a Smart Phone. Poor thing.

Don’t worry I will get to the bottom of this mystery, it’s not over yet.

Merry Month of May

Early17b-001Woz out doing a bit of ball catchin at me new dog beach the other day and these rowdy lunatics turned up.

Early17b-002

Kite Surfing, me socks… ya just distracting me gullible Humans from chucking me ball so clear off the lot of ya!!

Alright it was actually pretty cool. Wish I could have a go, I’d be great at it as long as someone glued me paws to the board, I’d hold the kite in me jaws and away we would go heh heh…

Early17b-004

Any by the way as I was such a good prezzy opener last Christmas I have now formally been promoted to Chief Prezzy Opener!

Early17b-005

Here’s me in action on Curly Humans recent birthday.

Early17b-003

Only thing… I was certain there would be another ball in there for me like on me birthday last month but nadder… not a thing. Bit miffed about that since I did such a great job.

Early17b-006

But then… A ball – loon. And what the blazes is it doing up there just floating… This is kinda weird! I bet me Humans’ have stashed it up there just to tease me, rotter’s. Better get it none the less.

Early17b-007

Oh I know it’s filled with helium! That’s why it floats. I’ve seen Curly suck some out of these floaters to make her voice go all squeaky. If I just get a bite into the thing and I will bark like a chihuahua!

Until next time…

They Forgot Me Birthday!

First thing this morning I was pestering me Humans for prezzies and birthday food… Nothin… It was like it was just any other day!

I’m 5 years old now, 35 in ya human years…and it’s me Birthday today.

pup1
That’s me on the left, the handsome dude next to me sis when I was 3 months old. My very first photo.

Born in Ireland under dubious circumstances that I don’t remember and my Humans don’t know about. They rescued me from a dog shelter in the New Forest of Southern England in 2012.

bday17-01

This is getting serious! Me day wears on as everyone disappears, going about their business. I’m still waiting for me walk, birthday cake, me prezzies…. Still nothin…

Boss Human comes home in the afternoon and I smell a rat. Well not literally obviously (well actually I do outside but that’s another story). There is a suspicious bulge in her bag and the smell of new packaging… could that be me prezzy?

bday17-02

After she dumps her bag and while my Humans are occupied I take the opportunity to check it out. I stick me head in the said bag… Yep, an undeclared package that me as the self appointed “Border Collie er… Control… Officer”, better have a closer look at.

But before I can inspect the mysterious package I hear the W.A.L.K. words. Me dim Human think by spelling it I don’t know what they are talking about but I do. I immediately head “stage left” for the front door at high speed deftly picking up a ball as I go. As me usual enthusiastic squealing reaches a fever pitch, the front door is opened and I burst out, heading for the car.

bday17-03

We take-off down the road towards the dog park but suddenly turn right instead of left.

Oy! Humans… Dog Park… other way… Me Humans mutter under their breaths “at least he has stopped squeaking”. Hey I don’t squeak, I’m just releasing my inner dog spirit when I’m on me way to the dog park!

bday17-04

OK, we have come to Quarantine Park, I like Quarantine Park, and its sunsets are brilliant too. Not as many dogs here because in general you are not allowed off-lead but a nice view and I love chasing me ball as it rolls full-speed down the hill (My Humans cheat and let me off-lead if no ones around. Hope that pesky ranger doesn’t spot me).

bday17-05

And… Oh look! There is a cake for me, you bloody Humans tricked me! But I love ya anyway. It’s made of me fav ingredients too. Tuna sandwiched between chicken and rice rolls and topped off with cheese. I better watch me weight after this one me thinks.

bday17-06
Heh heh… I knew they wouldn’t forget me prezzies!

bday17-07

It’s the dimming of the day as the sun sets over the Swan River so we decide to head home to greet me other Humans and of course open me prezzies and eat me cake too!

bday17-08
Cake smelling good me Family!

bday17-09
I’m not good at puffing out fires lit on cakes. Me Humans do it all the time…

bday17-10
Now that’s what I’m talking about

This is good tucker,  I need this more often! Now to me prezzies…

bday17-17

Hard work this opening prezzies but I think I’m about done. It seems I have another dumbbell type ball and some flying saucer thingy, not sure what that ones about yet. Love em!

bday17-18
I think you will find… that’s mine mate!

bday17-19

And that’s it for a great birthday that got off to a rocky start!

See ya soon

A Border Collies 14 Year Blog-A-Versary

Yep I’ve been blogging on WordPress since March 2015 that’s 14 dog-years mate! And besides that I will be 5 in human-years next month, that’s… er… 35 dog-years, just sayin. I’m feelin decidedly middle aged! Should I go out and get me Humans to purchase a flash ball?, I’m thinking something really big and flashy like …

waterball

I know… one those balls you can actually get inside and run on water! Yeah!

Is it true, this myth that 1 human year equals 7 dog years? This seems a little unfair to us dogs. Anyway various dog breeds have different average life spans. Me I plan to live forever anyway, I have a big world to see yet…

These are the 16 countries I’ve visited in me lifetime so far:  Germany, England, Wales, Ireland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Italy, UAE, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Holland and Australia. Yeah, I know, the UAE is pushin it a bit but I did overnight in Dubai on me way to Australia! Who knew eh? I’m a BC rescue and this is my life! To tell the truth though now that we have moved from Europe to me Humans home in Australia we haven’t travelled so much, it’s pretty isolated out here and I’m getting itchy feet…

Anyway back to my blog-a-versary, here are some of me fav blogs over the last 2 (Human) years and a special thank you to all of you who followed me adventures in those early days. Here are a few that were deemed popular or were me own personal favs. Enjoy!
